CFP AVI 2014 Workshop: Roadmap on future research in advanced visual interface display ecosystems (AVID 2014)

AVI 2014 Workshop: Roadmap on future research in advanced visual interface display ecosystems (AVID 2014)

Location: Como, Italy, May 27, 2014

Aaron Quigley (University of St. Andrews, United Kingdom), Victor Penichet Victor (University of Castilla-La Mancha, Spain), Harald Reiterer (University of Konstanz, Germany)

DescriptionAdvanced visual interface display ecosystems are physical environments, rooms or ad-hoc settings for co-located collaborative work that are augmented or supplemented with ubiquitous computing technology. However, there are significant challenges in the research, design, development and deployment of these types of ecosystem. The purpose of this research road-mapping workshop is threefold. Firstly, we aim to consolidate information, technical details and research directions from the diverse range of academic and industrial projects currently available. Secondly, based on visions of future ecosystems we will identify gaps in the current state of the art. And thirdly, we will identify new areas of research which require funding and support along with new areas for collaboration outside.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners who are avid to contribute to and aid in the development of a research roadmap. This roadmap can be used to inform, influence and disseminate ideas to funders, the wider research community and the general public. Based on submitted position papers and existing research it will describe the current baseline of display ecosystems and what research gaps need to be filled to allow us to achieve our research and developments ambitions.

If you only want to attend the workshop and not the whole conference this would be possible!

Best regards,

Workshop Co-chairs for AVID’14

CFP ICWE centrando la atención en el track HCI

Most Web applications are conceived as interactive systems that aim at communicating with users. Users do not only consume information via the Web, but can also play an active role by contributing content (e.g., Web 2.0), get involved in the development process of Web applications (e.g., agile and user-centered design processes) and even conceive their own components by interacting with specialized tools (e.g., end-user development tools). In this context, there are many user roles involved in the socio-technical environment encompassing the development of Web applications.

The aim of this track is to study user interface software and technologies that improve the relationship between users and Web applications. We welcome contributions that investigate solutions able to improve usability, accessibility, and user experience with Web applications, as well as user-centered design approaches that describe how Web technology and innovative design solutions can help users to better accomplish their tasks over the Web.

CFP: Special Issue on Large-Scale Ideation and Deliberation: Tools and Studies in Organizations at JSMO

Call for Papers
Large-Scale Ideation and Deliberation: Tools and Studies in Organizations
Special Issue for the Journal of Social Media in Organizations (JSMO)

Submission deadline: 28 June 2014

Social computing research has rapidly advanced during the past decade. Large crowds of people are now able to share knowledge using wikis, blogs, and forums; communicate using social networking platforms; and perform tasks using crowdsourcing platforms. In the meantime organizations have appropriated social computing for their own benefits. Thus, a new frontier for design and research has emerged: designing tools that support large-scale ideation and deliberation as well defined and repeatable processes in organizations and civic communities.
A number of promising applications have been developed for commercial and non-commercial uses, such as Ideastorm, Project 10 to the 100, and the LivingVoters guide. Powerful software support platforms have also appeared (for example, see www.spigit.com, www.ideascale.com, www.brightidea.com, http://evidence-hub.net/). Many types of organizations, from business to education to government, are seeking out such platforms to include their constituencies in their deliberation processes, and their constituencies increasingly expect such opportunities.
Those Large-Scale Ideation and Deliberation (LSID) platforms, however, face open challenges that include:
  • Overwhelming contribution volumes with large redundancy and variable quality
  • Visualizing and managing large-scale deliberations
  • Summarizing the state and content of deliberation to promote engagement and deepen understating, comparing, prioritizing and evaluating ideas, or groups of ideas
  • Generating collective creative solutions
  • Translating proposals into commitment to action
  • Proposing interaction, browsing, and input methods that stimulate participation and substantively empower participants
  • Handling complex problems whose solutions require many interdependent parts
  • Defining, evolving, and applying agreed-upon value criteria among multiple stakeholders
This special issue aims to gather experiences and reports on research done worldwide to cope with the aforementioned problems.

Types of Contributions and Review Process
We invite contributions that include (but are not limited to):
  • Empirical studies of communities or collaborative practices in organizations: e.g., case studies illustrating practices of large scale and self-organized work processes that point to specific design requirements.
  • Designs of new software tools or proof-of-concept prototypes supporting collective intelligence of communities of workers, or in-depth evaluations of tools already deployed that support collective intelligence in organizations.
  • Theoretical contributions on collective intelligence, crowdsourcing, and community-based learning in organizations, which can directly inform design and research.
  • Cases of multidisciplinary research showing the interplay between field studies, analysis of requirements, and development of tools facilitating collective intelligence.
Submissions should follow the JSMO formatting guidelines for authors, available at http://www.mitre.org/jsmo. Each submission will be peer-reviewed using the following criteria:
  • Significance of the contribution
  • Clarity and presentation quality
  • Relevance to the special issue themes
Submit papers via email to the special issue editors, whose addresses are below.

INTERACCION 2014: Conferenciantes confirmados (I)

Poco a poco se va conociendo las importantes incorporaciones a esta edición de Interacción 2014 que se celebrará del 10 al 12 de septiembre en Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife.
La primeras de ellas es la de Peter Robinson

Peter Robinson
Conference: Computation of Emotions
Peter Robinson is Professor of Computer Technology in the Computer Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, where he leads the Rainbow Research Group working on computer graphics and interaction. Professor Robinson's research concerns problems at the boundary between people and computers. This involves investigating new technologies to enhance communication between computers and their users, and new applications to exploit these technologies. The main focus for this is human-computer interaction, where he has been leading work for over 20 years on the use of video and paper as part of the user interface. The idea is to develop augmented environments in which everyday objects acquire computational properties through user interfaces based on video projection and digital cameras. Recent work has included desk-size projected displays and tangible interfaces. With rapid advances in key computing technologies and the heightened user expectation of computers, the development of socially and emotionally adept technologies is becoming a necessity. He has led investigations of the inference of people's mental states from facial expressions, vocal nuances, body posture and gesture, and other physiological signals, and also considered the expression of emotions by robots and cartoon avatars. He has also pursued a parallel line of research into inclusive user interfaces. Collaboration with the Engineering Design Centre has investigated questions of physical handicap, and research students have considered visual handicaps. This has broader applications for interaction with ubiquitous computers, where the input and output devices themselves impose limitations. Professor Robinson is a Fellow of Gonville & Caius College where he previously studied for a first degree in Mathematics and a PhD in Computer Science under Neil Wiseman. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the British Computer Society.
